I was worried about not racing last weekend and
my form going downhill but I managaed to get a
couple quick rides in after work just mainly speedwork.
I left for Folsom (Granite beach) Friday after
work to stay with friends who moved up there so
it was a kill 2 birds with 1 stone kinda trip.
Traffic wasn't bad but not good so it only took
3:30 hours to get to Fair Oaks aka Sacramento.
We went out to dineer at Il Fornio and was pretty
tasty and filling. Got a decent nights sleep woke
up at 7am the drive was 15 minutes to the race.
Stopped at Starbucks for my addiction and was
good to go. Did a warm up lap and was talking
to my friends who came to cheer me on. I wanted
them to get a good view of the action so I was
plotting a good look out spot. The course was
flat and fast. The course suited me to a T and
I was excited and ready to race.
I started towards the back the field was mellow
at the start but once we left it was go! I did
my usual pitiful start then told myself you didn't
drive 3+ hours to get a mid pack result you drove
up here to win. So with that mind set I went for
it passing on single track lines and within 1
lap I was 6th. I was happy and was just telling
myself to play it safe and just get in front of
this 1 guy and you are in the shwag. But once
again I was talking to myself saying why be happy
with 5th go for the win and take a chance. I could
tell as time wore on the 5 were getting tired
and slowing up so I waited for the last half lap
where there was a section of road then the rest
was single track and I made my pass. Without looking
back the rest of the lap I went almost full throttle
leaving a little just in case it came down to
a sprint. The last turn to the homestretch was
a sand pit with 2 barriers I made a little misstep
and the 2nd place guy was neck and neck with me
but I knew I had it in me to sprint and I sprinted
and could here the people cheering for him to
catch me so I knew it was mine. Once I crossed
the line I was in shock and asked my friends if
there was anyone in front of me and he said it
was all me.
1st place won $5 and a Continental wheel bag not
the big bucks but it was like winning alot more
in my book. Cat C is a beginner class so there
really isn't any perks to coming in 1st so it's
just something I can brag about to friends.
