My 1st Cyclocross race so I was pretty nervous.
I drove up to Candlestick Point and the weather
was perfect for being 7:30am Sunday. The race
was to start at 9am so I got my stuff all together
I rode the course 4 times before the race to get
a feel for the terrain and the where the barriers
were.
9am sharp the race starts my goup is the 2nd wave
30 seconds back. All I know is there is no taking
it easy at all the whole 40 minutes were spent
at 180+ beats a minute with no time to recover.
I got off the bike for every hill but 1 I did
not want to be the guy who jams up the hills for
everyone. Luckily I was pretty much riding by
myself most of the time. With 3 groups out on
the short course there was always someone near
you. I made up a lot of time on the flat hard
section and on the road part. The dirt course
part was real sandy and most of the time I would
just try to keep the bike straight and let it
do what it wanted through the soft stuff. I could
tell as the race went on more and more people
were flatting and getting tired so I was riding
by them with ease. With 2 laps to go I was lapped
but I did another lap for my own satisfaction.
I was pleased to just finish and now I can say
I am a CX racer. All I can say is cross racing
is half adrenaline rush and half being crazy.
I can't wait till the next one.
Next CX race: Sun Fort Ord
Travis Tonn.
