Another Sunday and another cyclocross race. Back
at Candlestick so I knew what to expect. Sand
and some short steep soft hills. I woke up late
but got there with an hour to spare so no big
deal but registration took 1/2 an hour so that
delayed things a bit. So I headed out for 3 warm
up laps and was happy with the course 2 sets of
barriers and 1 hill that was faster to run up
the rest of the course was flat with some sand
patches it looked to be a race made for me or
so I thought.
The race started a little late so no big deal
but I feeling slow right from the start and in
Cross racing that is a big no no!!! I was at the
back and that was not where I needed to be so
I pushed on for 2 laps then I followed Alan Coates
(masters 35+ star) as he was doing a lap of warmup
while we were racing and I followed his lines
and was passing quite a few people so I was starting
to feel better. The 2 laps to go yell came out
and I new it was time to drop the hammer so I
did whatever I could to pass people. 1 set of
the barriers was a series of turns in sand then
over the 2 barriers. Soon as my front tire I hit
the sand I was off the bike running and passing
quite a few peeps who were trying to ride throught
the sandy mess. Over the barriers I happen to
look at my HR monitor just to confirm that I was
maxing out. Sure enough 198 so I got back on the
bike and slowed down to recover since it was a
singletrack stretch I knew noone would pass. I
did a little recovery then got the HR right back
up on the flat road stretch. The last lap I played
it safe and did a few passes where I knew I could.
I was upset with how I raced but just happy to
be racing Cross. I didn't even wait for the results
since it is real hard to tell where you are in
your race due to the other 3 races going on at
the same time. But I knew they would post the
results on the site pretty quick. So I checked
today and 15th is a decent placing. I was hoping
for better but the first 2 laps I went to slow
so I can only blame myself.
