Another Sunday and another cyclocross race I am
sad as the season is coming down to it's last
full month of racing. December has 2 weekends
of racing and 1 race in January. This race was
at the Soquel High School. It was the 2nd race
in the series put on by the Vello Bella's. I talked
a friend into going for the ride over the hill
so he could take some pictures of me in action.
Race was at 9am and we arrived at 7:30 registered
not much just really check in. We use the same
numbers for the series and registration is all
done on Bikereg so it is just a matter of signing
and showing them your number. I prerode the course
and only 1 set of barriers and 1 runup with a
barrier at the bottom. Mostly flat course with
some nasty bumps and gopher holes as we circled
the high school. The course suited my non technical
power through the course style.
Race was 15 late as they were repairing a couple
spots were people had crashed in warm ups. Every
race I make the same stupid mistake of playing
it to easy out of the start and every race I pay
dearly this was no exception. As we start I get
behind a big slowdown through the sand section
and that was were I lost a majority of my time
to the leaders who did not have to deal with that
bottleneck. As my friend puts it "You must have
been on some caffeine rush the 2nd lap because
you made up a lot of time". The course suited
me and I hammered it each lap my heart rate never
dropped below 185 the whole time. As the race
wore on I got stronger and was passing people
pretty easy but the last lap my near max heart
rate caught up with me I did a quick glance down
at the old heart rate monitor to confirm my hunch
that I needed a recovery period. My only hope
was to stay in position and maybe someone might
make a mistake and I would pass that did not happen
but I came in 10th. With a better start I would
have for sure placed a lot higher. I just need
to work on my confidence of my riding abilities
and push myself from the start. I am even thinking
about upgrading to the Men's B cat for a longer
race since I seem to do better the longer we go.
Taking next weekend off for a trip to Vegas. I
would rather be racing but you know how those
things go...
Next CX race is 2 weeks at Fort Ord
Travis Tonn.
